Who We Are

Shanghai United International School (SUIS) is an independent, international day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 6-18, based on the educational principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB). SUIS Shang Yin Campus provides an opportunity for students to receive a certified international education while having direct contact with the student's native curriculum or language (ie. Judaic studies & Hebrew as a third language). We combine the best of Chinese and Western teaching and learning approaches and our bilingual education provides all students with the highest English and Chinese language proficiency as well as an understanding of the global cultures.

The SUIS Shang Yin Campus will

Provide bilingual education that ensures each student develop high proficiencies in English and Chinese as well as a full understanding of the related cultures;

Introduce mandatory music and phys Ed. programs;

Give every student the skills, knowledge and understanding that enable a full and satisfying life.

To encourage all students to discover and realize their full potential ;

Provide expatriate students with additional courses in their own native curriculum and languages.

International stream teachers

We hire only certified and experienced individuals to teach at our school. Some teachers are subject specialists, while others gained their experience in thematic and integrated curricula. Our teachers are trained by the IB organization. Our western teachers come from America, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK etc. All international stream teachers are supported by a team of trained teaching assistants whom help those students in need of additional English or Chinese language support, computer assisted learning, and individual guidance. The international stream is also benefited by the expertise of the Physical education, music and Art math teachers from the school’s domestic stream.

SUIS Shang Yin Campus intends to establish a reputation for academic excellence in both language and art. To realize this, the International Stream teachers are expected to:

encourage high standards in all aspects of school life;

work in a team, using team teaching approaches, so that they constantly learn from one another; and

promote an inter-cultural, happy, purposeful and productive school atmosphere.

Curriculum

The SUIS Shang Yin Campus international stream allows students to work towards graduating with an international bilingual education. Students are also required to take up a mandatory musical instrument. As a result, English, Chinese, Math, and Music are taught daily as separate subjects. These lessons are streamed so that individual learning needs can be met appropriately.

The SUIS Shang Yin Campus international stream curriculum is a combination of thematic and subject approaches using teaching techniques practiced in the East and West. The thematic curriculum is based on the world famous International Baccalaureate curriculum (IB), whereby each class is taught by two teachers: one western teacher and one Chinese teacher. IB lessons allow students to learn both languages by immersion. Respectively, 70 percent of the time is devoted to English, 30 percent to Chinese. Additional support is available to students, if required, through their attendance at the school’s Community Language and Cultural Centre.

Compulsory learning

1. IB
The International Baccalaureate (IB) provides the world’s most advanced learning framework, underpinned by a highly professional learning environment based on the principles of the IB delivered through an English and Chinese language medium.

2. English
English is the main mode of communication throughout the school (including interviews, examinations, and administration). English language lessons are taught on a regular basis of 2 hours per day, and with the exception of the Mandarin course teachers, all teachers are native English speakers. All students, even if they are first language English speakers, will be given a placement test upon registration. Younger students (ages 6 and under) will be given a simple oral test conducted by the department head.

3. Chinese
SUIS Shang Yin Campus has no doubt that in the coming years the ability to exchange in both English and Chinese will be a valuable social and professional asset. Mandarin Chinese makes up the other 30 percent of our school’s program and all students will have a 2 hour Mandarin lesson each day of the week. Just as the school recognizes different levels of English intake, Mandarin courses are divided between beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes. A placement test will be administered upon registration.

4. Math
Exceptional math skills are mandatory for numerous professional fields. Therefore SUIS understands the importance of a mathematics curriculum that is challenging and useful, ensuring students master basic arithmetic before graduation. Lessons are instructed in both English and Chinese and under both classical and contemporary methods, adhering to high principles and standards.

5. Third Language Program
In order to satisfy the needs of international expatriates from all over the world, SUIS Shang Yin Campus offers a special third language program. This program will help expatriate students retain and improve their native culture and language skills while learning English and Chinese in Shanghai. Expatriate students who enroll in this program will have an additional 40~80 minute lesson each day of the week.

6. Music, Art, Phys Ed.
Music lessons, art classes, and physical education are mandatory for all SUIS Shang Yin Campus students. These programs are an integral part of SUIS Shang Yin Campus’s curriculum and philosophy and students may not opt out of these classes.

Leaders of the International Stream

The International Stream is led by a team of experts from all backgrounds

Roger Sinnett
Mr. Sinnett is the principal of SUIS and an expert in IB curriculum. Mr. Sinnett worked as an international school principle for over fifteen years.

Trevor Higginbottom
Mr. Higginbottom is a former Senior Education Officer with the largest international school organization in Hong Kong and has led both school improvement and English language education projects for the Government of Hong Kong SAR. He is also a member of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for England and Wales. Mr. Higginbottom’s leadership is supported by a team of Western and Chinese senior and middle managers.

Dr. Don Petry
Dr. Petry is director of the National Council of Private Schools Association, and executive director of the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation. Dr. Petry was most recently awarded the Distinguished Educator Award by the Association of Independent Schools of Florida.

Mason Lee
Mr. Lee has an education degree from North America and has been operating English-language schools in Taiwan for over twelve years. He also authors and publishes his own line of textbooks and teaching materials. He is currently in China working as an education consultant and developing new projects.

School hours

School hours are from 8:20am to 4:00pm. The last lesson of the day will be timetabled either as a supervised lesson or an extra curricular activity (music, sports, arts and crafts, language, etc.).

Facilities

SUIS Shang Yin Campus is composed of three main blocks: one area for classrooms and administration, one area for the gymnasium and other recreational activities, and one for the cafeteria. SUIS Shang Yin Campus has an outdoor track and field course; a library; a music room; a drama and dance studio; an art studio; computer and science laboratories; and a large auditorium for assemblies and performances.

School meals

SUIS Shang Yin Campus has its own kitchen staff and prepares all its meals with fresh ingredients on site at the school. SUIS Shang Yin Campus promotes a healthy lifestyle and avoids serving food heavily saturated with fat, artificial flavoring, and preservatives. The school’s kitchen and cafeteria is also subject to routine health checks.

After school activities

Students may sign-up for after school activities on the first week of each new term. activities include, but are not limited to:

Tuition

Tuition includes teaching materials, meals, extra social activities and field trips.

Primary School (6-12 year olds)

A one-time non-refundable registration fee of 2,000RMB will be charged to all new students. The registration fee is to be paid upon submitting the application form.

*SUIS Shang Yin Campus offers a group discount of 20% on the tuition fees.

SUIS Shang Yin Campus is conveniently located in the south west of Shanghai, on Long Ming Road, Minhang. Easy access from Hongqiao and Gubei (15-20 min) and from downtown (15 min from Xujiahui) guarantee a minimal traveling time for your child.
